An understory species that grows in a wide range of forests and savannas. Drupes provide fall and winter food for birds and mammals. Purplish-red foliage is spectacular in the fall. Flowers visited mainly by bees, flies, and beetles. Larval host for Spring Azure (Celastrina ladon) and Henry's Elfin (Callophrys henrici).
