Although this species will grow in full sun, it is typically found in savanna conditions. It is a cool-season grass with a fine leaf texture. The seeds are indeed as sharp as needles. The awns twist and un-twist based on temperature and humidity, which helps drive them into the soil. If you walk throuh a patch after the seed matures, you will find it embedded in your shoes and clothing. This species is restricted to the far western half of the lower peninsula except for documented occurrences in Wayne county.
