Grows both as an emergent and on moist soils. The female (pistillate) flowers appear as greenish, prickly globes around 1" wide. The male (staminate) flowers are about 1/2" and white while blooming. The seeds are an important food source for wetland birds. This species is sometimes mistaken for a forb (dicot), but is indeed a monocot.
