In Michigan this species naturally occurs in a wide range of wetlands including shoreline, fens, and sedge meadows. It is typically associated with calcareous soils. It will tolerate mesic soils and does occur in mesic prairies to our west. The flowers are extremely attractive to many insects. This species closely resembles Solidago riddellii (Riddell's Goldenrod) and they can often be found growing at the same sites.
