Sambucus racemosa

Common Names: Red Elderberry, Red-berried Elder

Soil: Dry-Mesic  Mesic  Wet-Mesic
Height: 4 ft - 12 ft
Blooming: May Jun

The foliage is quite similar in appearance to Common Elderberry, but the fruit is bright red. Additionally, this species tends to grow in drier conditions and blooms earlier; its most typical habitat in our area is Beech/Maple forest. The fruit is consumed by some birds and small mammals, but is not as attractive to wildlife as Common Elderberry.
