A variable species typically associated with sandy soils, both mesic and dry. Flowers primarily attract bees, beetles, and flies. This plant hosts a huge number of insect species including: Mourning Cloak (Nymphalis antiopa), Striped Hairstreak (Satyrium liparops), Acadian Hairstreak (Satyrium acadicum), Red-Spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax), Viceroy (Limenitis archippus), Dreamy Duskywing (Erynnis icelus), Clemen'sSphinx (Sphinx luscitiosa), and PolyphemusMoth (Antheraea polyphemus). Also note it is dioecious.
