This emergent species occurs in a very wide range of wet habitats. It typically grows in shallow waters and can tolerate depths up to 2ft. It also can grow where water levels drop during the summer as long as the soil stays saturated. The flowers are visited by a very large diversity of insect species. The seeds and tubers are eaten by many species, but it is particularly relished by waterfowl. Hence the other common name Duck Potato.
