The arching stems bear dangling white flowers from late spring to early summer. The round berries appear in late summer and change from green to dark blue. It is very adaptable. It occurs in a wide range of soil types and light conditions, but typically grows in in light or open shade. It very rarely reaches 4 feet in height. It is primarily pollinated by bees, but does occasionaly attract hummingbirds. Deer are fond of the foliage.
