Opuntia humifusa

Yes, we do have a native cactus in Michigan. Actually two, but the other species, Opuntia fragilis, is from the north and only grows on rock outcroppings. The species we sell has a native range on the western side of the lower peninsula, mostly within 50 miles of the lakeshore. Requires a sandy or gravelly, well-drained soil and grows best in full sun. Slowly spreads to form a "mat". Flowers are extremely showy and quite large, up to 4 in across. Fruits are edible (be sure to remove glochids). Our plants are typically propagated using stem cuttings from indigenous stock from our property. Stock from seeds will be produced upon requests.
