Frasera caroliniensisCommon Name: American ColumboSynonym(s): Swertia caroliniensis | Soil: Dry-Mesic Mesic | |
Height: 5 ft - 8 ft | ||
Blooming: May Jun |
This is a monocarpic perennial, flowering once and then dying. Prior to flowering, it is a 2 to 3 feet wide rosette of leaves. It takes 7 to 15+ years before blooming, and I have yet to find literature citing exactly what conditions cause it to bloom. During the rosette stage, this plant is usually under a foot tall. It attains a height of 5 to 8 feet when flowering. This is a species of savannas, forest edges, and rich prairies. I have witnessed bees, wasps, skippers, and beetles visiting the flowers.
