A very adaptable shrub. Pioneer and land surveyor accounts often mention this species as a major component of our former savannas and open oak woodlands. The nuts are indeed edible, and are relished by wildlife. The nuts need to be collected soon after ripening as they disappear quickly. This is a fire-adapted shrub that quickly resprouts after fire or mowing. It is a multi-stemmed shrub. Additionally, this species has nice fall foliage colors ranging from yellow to reddish.
