This common shrub can be found in a wide range of habitats. It is most abundant in wetlands where it can form very large and dense thickets. It is an extemely valuable plant for wildlife. It's flowers are visited by a huge assortment of pollinators; it is a host plant for a great many insects, its berries are an important food source for birds and many mammals, and it is often used for bird nesting sites.
