A medium to large rounded shrub with creamy white, flat flowers clusters followed by blue drupes in the fall. Foliage turns red to purplish in the fall. Fruit is relished by birds and this species is the larval host for the Spring Azure(Celastrina ladon) and Summer Azure (Celastrina neglecta).
