Listed as Threatened in Michigan. In southwest Michigan its primary habitats were prairie, oak savanna and fen. With the massive loss of both prairie and savanna communiites, it is now mostly restricted to fens. The flowers are an exquisite shade of magenta. Does not spread by rhizomes like Common Milkweed. Attracts the typical plethora of Milkweed pollinators and herbivores. Tends to go dormant earlier than other Milkweeds, particularly in drier habitats.
