Unique with its ability to change sex from year to year (known as paradioecious). It usually starts off as a male during its first few years, then turns female once enough energy has been stored in its corm. It then varies from year to year depending on the environment and it energy reserves. Plant contains calcium oxalate crystals which will cause a powerful burning sensation if eaten raw.
