A plant of oak woodlands and savannas. Spreads to form colonies. Attracts a wide assortment of bees, butterflies, moths, wasps, flies, and beetles. Larval host for the Silvery Checkerspot (Chlosyne nycteis), Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), and Gorgone Checkerspot(Chlosyne gorgone). Seeds are also eaten by many birds.
