Baptisia alba var. macrophyllaCommon Name: White Wild IndigoSynonym(s): Baptisia leucantha, Baptisia lactea | Soil: Dry Dry-Mesic Mesic Wet-Mesic | |
Height: 3 ft - 5 ft | ||
Blooming: Jun Jul |
A species of Special Concern in Michigan. Adaptable and drought resistant once established. Immense root system penetrating up to 15 feet plus. My current pictures do not do justice for this spectacular species. In addition to being a pollen/nectar source for many bee species, this is the host plant for the Wild Indigo Duskywing (Erynnis baptisiae), and Hoary Edge (Achalarus lyciades). The seed predator Wild Indigo Weevil (Apion rostrum) is also quit common in our last remaining stable stands of this species. This may be a bane to seed collectors, but who knows what role this species plays in the delicate balance of life. May live over 100 years.
