Spiraea tomentosaCommon Names: Steeplebush, Hardhack | Soil: Mesic Wet-Mesic Wet | |
Height: 2 ft - 4 ft | ||
Blooming: Jul Aug Sep |
Typically found in moist to wet acidic soils that include a large constituent of sand in them. Its close relative, Spiraea alba (Meadowsweet), is often found growing alongside it. Although it is a shrub, its appearance resembles a forb (wildflower) as it is rarely branched. The pink flower spikes primarily attract bees, beetles, and flies. Rarely eaten by mammals as the foliage is quite bitter.
