Typically found in mesic to wet forests, it is extremely adaptable and does quite well in drier, shaded sites. Leaves are very fragrant. Early season source of nectar and pollen for small insects. Larval host for the Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus), Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), Promethea Moth (Callosamia promethea), and Saddleback Caterpillar (Acharia stimulea). Produces bright red drupes in the fall.
