Ranging from floodplain forest to Beech/Maple forest; it also is found in Oak forests/savannas. The yellow drooping and twisted flowers appear in spring, but unlike many other spring ephemerals, it's foliage is typically present the entire growing season. It slowly spreads to form colonies. It is primarily pollinated by bumblebees and other early season bees.
