Hydrastis canadensis

Listed as Threatened in Michigan. This species is typically found in rich forests and savannas, but it can occassionally be found in oak/hickory woodlands. It grows in deep shade, but seems to prefer open or light shade. It typically spreads slowly to form loose colonies. The flowers are white and eventually form a cluster of red fruits that look like a raspberry. I suspect chipmunks or mice eat the berries, but have not had any direct observations; something does occassionally eat them though. It is pollinated primarily by small bees and flies. I have not witnessed any leaf damage by mammals. This species has been severely depleted in the wild by overcollection of its rhizomes for medicinal purposes.
