Primarily pollinated by hummingbirds and bumblebees, but also visited by short-tongued bees. It will self-sow readily in ideal conditions. Individual specimens are often short-lived. Host species for the Columbine Duskywing (Erynnis lucilius), Columbine Sawfly (Pristophora aquiligae), Columbine Leaf Miner (Phytomyza aquilegivora).
