Cornus alternifoliaCommon Names: Alternate-leaved Dogwood, Pagoda Dogwood | Soil: Mesic Wet-Mesic Wet | |
Height: 10 ft - 25 ft | ||
Blooming: May Jun |
This is an understory tree or shrub; it is single-stemmed and does not sucker. The growth habit is very unique and easily identifiable with groupings of horizontal branches extending parallel to the ground from the main shoot. The groupings of branches are separated by branchless sections of the main trunk giving it a "pagoda" or layered appearance. In the wild it is typically found in partly shaded sites within rich forests or hardwood swamps, but can be grown in full sun if the soil retains good moisture levels. The dark blue fruits are relished by birds and quickly eaten as soon as they ripen.
